Guide for Doctors working in Ireland

Ireland Permanent Residency(Stamp 4) in 2 years

Ireland Permanent Residency(Stamp 4) in 2 years

Introduction to Stamp 4

Stamp 4 is a permanent residency(PR) permit after which you can:

1: Take up employment and are not required to hold an Employment Permit.

2: You can work in a profession, subject to the conditions of the relevant professional or other bodies.

3: You can establish and operate a business.

4: You may access state funds and services as determined by Government departments or agencies. If you wish to stay in Ireland past the expiry date of your immigration permission, you must apply to renew your permission and registration before they expire.

Difference between Stamp 4 & Nationality

Doctors can now get Stamp 4 (PR) in 2 years while for nationality you must complete 5 years of residency in Ireland before you apply.

Up to 1,800 doctors to benefit from changes to immigration rules. Your spouse will also have the right to work if they are not Doctors. Read the news here.

What is the procedure to apply for stamp 4?

When this new development was introduced doctors were asked to get support letters from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) once 21 months of employment was completed and that support letter was submitted to the immigration officer in Garda Station. Now you do not need any support letter from DETE and once your 21 Months are completed you can visit the Immigration Officer at Garda station by appointment to apply for stamp 4.

Key Point

Please note you will be awarded stamp 1H when you start employment and your spouse will get stamp 1G on which your spouse will be eligible to work as well.

After getting stamp 4, is it possible to move to the UK for training but still able to get eligible for Irish citizenship? Is it mandatory to stay in Ireland to get Irish passport?

Yes you can visit for sure. But you should not stay outside Ireland more then 6 weeks in 1 year otherwise it will delay your nationality period. Thanks

Hi. Is this rule of stamp4 after 2 years of work still valid for new doctors coming to Ireland or they have reversed this rule now?

Worked in IE for two years under CPSP/HSE Scholarship Programme from 2017-2019 and then left the country. Currently in Ireland since Feb 2024. Do you think I am eligible for Stamp 4 based on previous work experience and stay?
