Greg Barclay, the independent chairman of the International Cricket Council, has warned fans of a decline in cricket over the next few years – and says women’s Tests are “not part of the future”. “.

143 women’s Tests have been played in its 88-year history, but only five since 2015, and only once since 2007 have a team other than England, India and Australia participated in one. Barclay does not expect to increase in the program, as the sport focuses more on short-term training.

“When you look at the way football is going, there’s no doubt that white football is the way of the future – it’s the game that fans want, it’s where the media put their resources and it’s where the money goes,” said Barclay.
“So the provinces that promote women’s football will focus on that. To play cricket you have to have a domestic presence and that doesn’t really exist anymore, so I don’t really see Women’s Test or senior cricket progressing in any way. That’s not to say they can’t choose to play Test cricket, but I don’t really see them progressing to any real level as part of the format.
Barclay, who has been New Zealand’s director of cricket for the past eight years, was elected ICC president in 2020 after Afghanistan’s failure to field a women’s team narrowed the chances of being stripped of full membership, signaling its collapse. The women’s game in the country represents a “bad thing” since the Taliban seized power last year.
“The people involved in Afghanistan Cricket assured me that they are doing everything possible to promote the women’s game and what has happened along the way is encouraging,” he said. “Some members have also taken slow steps to promote the women’s game, so let’s give them time.”

But the bad news for Test cricket is not limited to the women’s game, with Barclay warning that many countries – perhaps all – are out of the game for the economies of India, Australia and England. – will play a few games in the future.
“Men’s cricket reflects the history and heritage of the game – that’s what makes the game special,” he said. “We are fortunate that we have other formats that help us sustain the game of cricket financially because apart from one or two series the councils are losing money.
“The World Test Championship has brought significance to it. In 10 or 15 years’ time I still see Test cricket as an important part, [but] it has to be accepted that some of the younger players are not playing as much cricket as they want to. At the top of the Indian order, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma scored 52 and 40 respectively, with Vastrakar and Rana, the quartet scoring all but 32 in all.

In the second half, they were 78 for five, 100 for three for India, and were struggling to cope with the spin of Rajeshwari Gayakwad and the good hands of 18-year-old Richa Ghosh behind the wickets.
Veteran left-armer Gayakwad took four wickets for 31 runs in his 10 minutes, while teenager Ghosh took five wickets with four catches and one header.
“We gave them easy runs, we slipped up the field, we didn’t force them,” he said. “Our games need to improve, the shot selection is not good, we will do it before the next game.”

More money More noise. Many programs. The arrival of a new Twenty20 franchise in India is set to change women’s football.
The Women’s Championship kicks off in Mumbai on Saturday with star players from around the world, a week after Australia defend their T20 World Cup in South Africa.
The WPL is supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India due to the huge success of the Indian Premier League, the biggest competition in the sport.
Mithali Raj, former India captain and Gujarat Giants mentor, said, “The Women’s Championship is a huge development. Indian cricketers are now committed to the sport for the long term, and this will benefit Indian football in long time.” The league will expand in the future and bring economy to the women’s game. “

The BCCI has resisted calling for a women’s T20 tournament for many years due to lack of interest from sponsors and broadcasters, but has planned a four-match Women’s T20 tournament to challenge the IPL. Other countries, including Australia and England that dominate women’s football, have stolen the lead in terms of women’s leagues.
But late last year, India’s top cricket authority took action following the publication of a financial investigation report on women’s T20 cricket and the birth of the WPL.
Five of the starters in the competition went up for auction in January and sold for a combined $580 million. The three regular men’s IPL teams – Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals – have bought WPL franchises with bases in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi. Two franchises have been set up with Adani Group and Capri Global buying the Ahmedabad giants operating in Gujarat and setting up UP Warriors in Lucknow.
The three-week tournament consists of 22 games, including 20 inches
