Vice Captain Of Indian Cricket Team – The appointment of veteran Cheteshwar Pujara as Team India’s vice-captain has come as a shock to the cricket-mad nation, with fans and former cricketers alike expressing dismay at the decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The latest move by the Indian cricket board was criticized by none other than Mohammad Kaif, the hero of the national team’s NatWest Trophy victory two decades ago.

After Virat Kohli stepped down as skipper earlier this year, Rohit Sharma was named India’s captain in all three formats, while KL Rahul was named as his replacement.

Whenever one of them got injured, KL Rahul took over the captaincy. And if these two were not available for selection, Jasprit Bumrah stepped in as the skipper and Rishabh Pant filled the vice-captain’s shoes.

But after India recently lost the ODI series to Bangladesh under Rohit Sharma, their second straight loss to the minnows there, the Indian team management took a strange decision to name Cheteshwar Pujara as KL Rahul’s replacement. KL Rahul was named captain for the first Test in Chattogram after Rohit Sharma dislocated his thumb during the second ODI in Dhaka.

The appointment of Cheteshwar Pujara as vice-captain has surprised pundits and fans alike as it was not that long ago that he was dropped from the team before making a comeback due to his strong performances in the English county season.

Also at the age of almost 35, he is no longer named as India’s long-serving skipper. His batting form has not been too good either, and thus he is not guaranteed a place in the side even in the sport’s longest format.

Hence, Team India supporters have termed BCCI’s move as a step in wrong direction and have advocated for re-appointment of Rishabh Pant as KL Rahul’s replacement.

Rishabh Pant may have struggled for runs in limited-overs cricket, but he has been India’s best match-winner in Tests, leading the team to sensational series wins in Australia and at home.

“It’s a bit shocking for me because last time we played Rishabh Pant as vice-captain,” said Mohammad Kaif in an interaction with Sony Sports. “Pujara was there in the (England) team, so either you have made a mistake here or there in England. Someone has made a mistake. Why the rush? Why is Pant in such a rush to be the captain? He is a newcomer who is about to find his feet at international level. I understand that he has won great matches but he is still young. You don’t make someone captain or vice-captain so early. Why the rush? I don’t understand. Why can’t someone who just keep performing and winning matches? The priority should be winning matches for your team, not the captain. We focus so much on the players,” added Mohammad Kaif.

Although Mohammad Kaif rejected the removal of Cheteshwar Pujara as vice-captain, he was widely praised for his return to the Indian cricket team just months after being dropped from the side.

– The way he scored after being relegated has been an example for young players on how to make a comeback. He went on to play county cricket, scoring centuries in four-day matches and 50-over matches, prompting the selectors to call back. He made the electorate surrender before him,” he noted. “Age has nothing to do with cricket. It’s a skill-based game. It’s not football where you have to keep running up and down during the match. In fact, age is a plus. With experience, you learn and develop. Pujara, Kohli and Rohit and good examples. Test cricket is a skill based format you have to play for days and you need experience for that. You need players who can hit the swings and stitch the pitches and you only get better with time. Pujara is a good example,” Mohammad Kaif summed up.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped a bomb when they announced the squad for the third and fourth Tests of the India-Australia series. While there were no changes in the team composition, the fact to note in the announcement was that KL Rahul was not the vice-captain of the team.

Deputizing for Rohit Sharma in the first two matches, Rahul has led the team in three Test matches in his career. But his poor form has seen him lose his status and his place in the squad for the Indore Test is now in serious doubt with Shubman Gill waiting in the wings.

India face a tough decision as Risbhabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah were clearly cut for the role after Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as captain, but both have been out for a long time.

Cheteshwar Pujara: Pujara was named India’s vice-captain in the Bangladesh series with Rahul leading the team and is the most likely choice to take over the role on a permanent basis. Pujara led County’s Sussex last year and is the second most experienced player in the Indian team having played 100 Test matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin: Ashwin is not only one of the best players in the Indian team but also one of the best to impact the game. With more than 450 Test hits in 90 innings in the Indian team, few have as much pedigree as Ashwin. Ashwin is also widely recognized as one of the smartest players in the team with good game awareness, making him an ideal choice for the role.
