Geelong Cricket Ground, Victoria – Australia’s Pat Cummins says adapting to the unique characteristics of Geelong’s Cardinia Park is essential for the second KFC T20 INTL against Sri Lanka on Sunday night.
A T20I double-header, where the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will play New Zealand, will be the first international match hosted by the venue before Australia’s men look to level their series against Sri Lanka.

To keep the pitch narrow (commonly used for Australian Rules football) in accordance with International Council guidelines, the drop-in pitch is positioned centrally at a north-east to south-west angle.
Regional Victoria Is Officially Hosting The 2026 Commonwealth Games
Traditionally, Taman Kardinia’s pitch follows the goal-to-goalpost line, but the 115m-wide ground fails to meet the ICC’s guidelines, which require a minimum distance of 137.16m from the boundary to the square of the wicket.
The subtle change opens up more of the wicket’s square footage, allowing it to meet the ground requirement, which is the smaller of the two square foot boundaries, which must be at least 59.43 metres.
“It’s a long, straight pitch here, similar to Bellerive Oval or Adelaide Oval in Tasmania,” Cummins said after inspecting the ground on Saturday.
“The track is actually a bit of a slope … which means there are some short pockets on the good legs, but also some long ones.

“It’s just a matter of figuring out which part of the field we’re going to try to get the batsmen on.
The Australian team had their first appearance on the Cardinia Park pitch on Saturday evening, but their visit to Geelong was cut short when heavy rain forced them to abandon their planned clean session.
Previously, the ground hosted a KFC Big Bash League warm-up match between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars and a tour match between West Indies and Victorian XI in late 2015.
Two members of Australia’s T20 squad – captain Aaron Finch and leg-spinner Adam Zampa – played in BBL warm-up matches, so will have some ideas on how to cope with the unique layout of Cardinia Park.

Finch has strong ties to where he grew up in the town of Colac, 75km west of Geelong, 75km south-west of Melbourne. Finch play club alongside Geelong, whose home matches are played next door to the main stadium.
While Cummins said he wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from the wicket, he was optimistic it would deliver more pace than he would see at the MCG during Friday night’s opening T20I.
“I (didn’t know what to expect) to be honest, I’ve watched a few AFL games on TV,” Cummins said.
“It’s rock hard and there’s a lot of grass, so I think me and Billy Stanlake will have some speed and bounce.” Symonds Stadium is a world-class cricket venue located in Kardinia Park, South Geelong, in the Australian state of Victoria.
