Asia Cup 2022: Sridharan Sriram Takes Charge As Technical Consultant For Bangladesh Cricket
The appointment of Chandika Hathurusingh as the head coach of Bangladesh has drawn mixed reactions from the cricketing fraternity in the country. The new two-year deal will be Hathurusingha’s second term in office, having spent three years, from 2014 to 2017, before abruptly leaving for Sri Lanka. According to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, he is back as coach in all formats, which almost rules out S Sriram as T20I coach. BCB announced Hathurusingha as the new coach on Tuesday, four weeks after Russell Domingo resigned following suggestions by the board that they were looking for a new coach. Hathurusingha has been on BCB’s wish list for a long time even after he resigned in October 2017. This is despite his successors Steve Rhodes (2018-19) and Domingo (2019-22) having a better win rate than Hathurusingha. Rhodes had a 51.11 win percentage in 45 games, while Domingo had a 42.34 win percentage across all formats. Both had significantly better ODI and T20I results than Hathurusingha, who had a better Test record, winning six out of 21 matches during his tenure.
Many believed BCB was in a rush to get rid of Rhodes after the 2019 World Cup, while Domingo resigned after finding himself in an untenable position amid criticism of his coaching style from the board. But the timing remains questionable. The criticism came after the home team’s 2-1 ODI win over India in December. Former captain Mashrafe Mortaza said the manner in which Hathurusinha left his Bangladesh job in 2017 left a bad taste in his mouth. certainly not a good example,” Mashrafe told Prothom Alo. “Jamie Siddons was also brought back. They are two of the best technical and tactical coaches I have ever seen. Maybe that’s why the board decided it was best to bring him back. There is also a coaching crisis. find coaches because there are so many franchise tournaments. BCB has taken the right decision in this regard. “There will be no problem if he [Hathurusingha] leaves like Siddons who wanted to stay as Bangladesh coach. Hathurusingha left midway through the contract. He did not answer our board president’s phone or respond to his text message. He left suddenly. It’s always a matter of respect. Jalal Yunus, BCB’s chairman of cricket operations, said Hathurusinha will be familiar with the culture of the Bangladeshi team and players and has been on the board for two years. “We are happy,” Yunus said. “He’s worked here before, so he won’t need much time to adapt here. He knows the players and the environment. He is a good coach. He has the quality that players need. He was always interested in cricket in Bangladesh. I hope he stays longer this time and honors his contract. Judging by what he told us, we expect him to work hard for two years.

Mashrafe, who captained 69 of 102 matches during Hathurusinha’s first tenure as Bangladesh coach, said the players’ reaction to Hathurusinha’s return to the dressing room was his main concern. During the second half of his time as Bangladesh coach, there were rumors about how he treated the players. “There remains a huge question mark as to how the dressing room will take him,” Mashrafe said. “The most important thing is how good he feels and the dressing room. Apart from two or four new faces, most of the players are the same [from his first stint].” We have to see if he forgets the past or behaves the same way as before and how the players react to those things. Hathurusingha is an international coach so I’m sure he can handle anything. The sooner this happens, the better. Yunus said the criticism was unnecessary as BCB was looking for his father as a coach. “Director is not the right word,” he said. “We need a coach who has to act like a guard. Someone who can explain to the players and then get the best out of it. He has that quality.” We have an important series against England coming up. It is part of the ICC Super League. First of all, he is focused on the World Cup this year. We have eight to nine months in our hands. Mashrafe said that the two current captains Tamim Iqbal (ODI) and Shakib Al Hasan (Tests and T20Is) know Hathurusingha well enough to work with him properly. But he said a lot depends on how BCB handles Hathurusingha. In the past, he has had public clashes with two BCB cricket operations committee chairmen and former top selector Farooq Ahmed. “Shakib and Tamim will coordinate well with Hathurusingha,” Mashrafe said. They have a good relationship with Hathurusingha, although there have been one or two incidents with Shakib. Ultimately on account he is the best player of the team. Hathurusingha is also familiar with the culture of Bangladesh so I think he will do well from the end. His influence will depend on the discussions between Papon [Nazmul Hassan] bhai and Hathurusingha. I believe that Hathurusingha will be in a stronger position this time. [Whether it will be good for Bangladesh cricket or not] depends on how well the board can keep it under control. work together [with all] “Former chief selector Farooq Ahmed Two days before Hathurusingha was appointed as the next coach, BCB director Khaled Mahmood said he felt it would be a timely appointment. “It would be good if Hathurusingha comes” , said Mahmood, who worked as the group’s manager during Hathurusingha’s first stint. “He has worked in Bangladesh before. He had many good performances during his time. He’s more mature [now], which is good for the band. I think it’s positive that it’s coming a second time. He understands us well because he too is from the subcontinent. Ahmed, who was the head coach before the Hathurusinha incident and resignation in 2016, was however a bit skeptical. Chandika Hathurusingha, with very high expectations in mind,” said Ahmed Prothom Alo on 1 February. “But the board probably forgot the last time he left his job. Usually those who leave like that can’t bring anything good back. Subconsciously, both parties remember past incidents. When the team is not going, BCB will feel why we brought him back. The trainer will not be able to tell He will also have his last exit in the back of the head. If his departure was normal, there would be no question of his return. “I doubt it’s a wise decision. If BCB brings him back after such an exit, it will reduce Hathurusingh’s liability. He will dictate to us. I think working together is important. Far as I know
